Paving stones – the best road surface without alternatives

Granite paving stones are a material that was used for paving city streets hundreds of years ago. Now, of course, most of the surfaces (car and pedestrian) are asphalt or concrete. However, paving stones are once again becoming a trendy material in Ukraine: this stone is used to cover areas in front of shopping centers, paths in parks, garden plots near cottages, city squares. What is a paving stone?

A paving stone is essentially a small piece of material shaped like a parallelepiped. It is quite thick: this is necessary to ensure that the road surface is as durable as possible. Thanks to this, the material can be laid on a sand cushion, tightly fitting the stones to each other – and this surface will remain just as beautiful and reliable for decades.

There are two common formats of paving stones: split and sawn, as well as an intermediate option – sawn-split. Split paving stones in Kyiv are an example of a product that has undergone rough processing. Its shape and size are quite arbitrary. Sawn material is carefully processed, with smooth surfaces, so it can be laid as evenly as possible. To protect against falls, the outer surface of such a stone is made rough. As for the intermediate option, such paving stones have both sawn and split surfaces.

It is worth starting with the fact that a road paved with granite paving stones has no drawbacks. This is true if two conditions are met: if the production of the material complied with the technology and standards and if the stone was laid by professionals. • durability – the service life is measured in tens and even hundreds of years (it all depends on the type of stone and conditions);
• there are almost no puddles on the surface: raindrops and melt water are absorbed through the gaps between the stones (“seams”);
• environmental safety – granite does not emit harmful substances even when heated, which cannot be said about asphalt;
• practicality of paved surfaces: for example, when repairing communications, you can locally dismantle the stones, and after the work is completed, return them to their place, completely recreating the surface. This will not work with asphalt.
