Granite paving slabs: material properties

Features of granite paving slabs

Long service life is a key advantage of granite slabs. In comparison, concrete slabs used as pavement coverings will need to be repaired or replaced after 3-4 years of use. Asphalt pavement will require repair after only 2 years. If the area is subject to heavy precipitation, all non-stone materials will deteriorate even faster.

Granite paving slabs will retain their properties for decades. If excessive load is applied to any part of the pavement, the worst that can happen is that one or more stones will crack. Replacing them is a simple and inexpensive process, after which the pavement will be completely restored. At the same time, repairing asphalt requires removing the pavement, laying new pavement on the damaged area, and using specialized equipment and expensive machinery. Therefore, the use of granite paving slabs for sidewalks is economically justified.

Classification of granite paving slabs

Modern granite paving slabs in Kiev are classified by type of processing as follows:

1. Fully chipped – all surfaces are uneven, and the geometry is far from ideal.
2. Chipped and sawn – the surface is smooth on 1-2 sides and chipped and uneven on the others.
3. Sawn and chipped – the surface is smooth on most sides and chipped on the front.
4. Fully sawn – all sides are smooth and each stone is precisely cut to size.

There are also differences in the methods of processing (mainly only the front surface is subjected to it). Processing is most often necessary to make the tiles non-slip and safe in bad weather. In modern conditions, granite paving slabs are subject to heat treatment, bush hammering or tumbling. Each technology is effective and allows the stone to achieve the required properties.

Ideally, granite paving slabs are a material whose thickness is less than the sum of the three width measurements. Other material options are classified as paving stones. Granite bases for pavements are divided into the following types according to their shape:

• • checkers – most often have the shape of a cube with sides of 50 mm or 100 mm;
  • rectangular paving stones – a common base size is 200×100 mm, the thickness can vary between 30-80 mm;
  • shaped tiles – have 4-5 sawn sides (the rest are chipped) or can be fully sawn. The front shape is complex: circle, rhombus, fan, honeycomb, etc.

The color of granite tiles depends on the stone deposit. The shade is determined by the feldspar content. The most common shades are gray, red, black, pink, green, and orange.
